Step into the vibrant world of Merwin's and meet the culinary dream team – Shrushti Wanare and Jason Bothello. In 2014, Shrushti's journey unfolded in the bustling lanes of Mumbai during her Mass Media in Jai Hind college years. From navigating diverse roles, including PR executive for Chrome Communications, Experiential marketing manager at Geometry|Encompass, to a senior content producer at Mumbai Foodie and Lost & Hungry Studios -it was the irresistible allure of food that led her to Bombay Canteen, India's top restaurant in 2018, where she traded a corporate paycheck for the kitchen hustle.
Jason's culinary tale began as a toddler, nurtured by visits to his dad's JMB Bakery & Engineering factory in Mumbai. After honing his skills at Rizvi College of Hotel Management and interning at prestigious establishments like ITC Maratha and Theobroma, he set his sights on the School for European Pastry.
Their paths converged at the School for European Pastry in 2020, amid pandemic challenges. Shrushti explored media intricacies, while Jason's culinary journey soared. Crafting and selling homemade delights became their pandemic pivot, laying the foundation for Merwin's.
A year passed, and Shrushti's relentless spirit drew her back to her hometown, Nagpur, in 2023. Fueled by a vision to elevate the city's hospitality, she embarked on a mission to bridge the gaps she discovered.
Enter Jason, seeking a new opportunity. Their paths crossed once again, leading to a bold decision: Jason bid farewell to Mumbai, and together, they set the stage for Merwin's in Nagpur.
A partnership was born, marking the inception of a culinary haven that aims not just to satisfy taste buds but to redefine the standards of excellence in Nagpur's gastronomic landscape.
From the humble streets of Nagpur to the heart of Merwin's, our journey began with a determination to bridge gaps and serve the community directly. Armed with a car boot as our makeshift storefront, we embarked on a street-selling adventure, parking opposite a so-called legendary restaurant near VCA.
Starting at 10 am and continuing till 4 pm, then resuming from 6 pm to 11 pm, our evenings were a symphony of baking, setting up shop, and connecting with our audience firsthand. Our boot-sale days were a mix of triumphs and challenges – from quick sell-outs to coping with wastage and facing unwarranted threats from authorities.
These street-side encounters provided invaluable feedback-Our menu evolved based on the voices of Nagpur. What started as 'Merwin's Buns' paired with hot chips for 89 INR grew, thanks to repeat customers.
This street-side chapter wasn't just a beginning; it was a school of learning, resilience, and community connection. These experiences laid the foundation for Merwin's, where every sandwich carries the warmth and flavor of our journey
The name 'Merwin' isn't just a brand; it's Jason's middle name. Shrushti surprised him with the brand name and logo, printed and ready to go, just hours before their first street sale. Imagine his surprise seeing his name literally on display!
In July 2023, Merwin's wasn't just an eatery opening its doors; it was the culmination of relentless nights, shared dreams, and the collective heartbeat of a community. Every detail, from sweeping floors to checking ovens, was a labor of love.
The process transcended a mere restaurant setup; it was a symphony of emotions and gratitude. Shrushti's close friends from Bombay lent their hands and hearts, turning the journey into a memorable collaborative effort. Merwin's took shape not just physically but as a concept, a vibe, and a familial haven.
The anticipation reached its peak on July 20th, 2023, when we finally welcomed our patrons – now cherished members of the Merwin's family. The doors swung open, not just to a place to eat, but to an experience crafted with love, dedication, and the spirit of community. Merwin's, born from a dream, now stands as a vibrant reality, echoing the stories of those who made it possible.
Merwin's: Opened with a dash of dreams, a sprinkle of friends, and a whole village of support!
